The Twelve Kingdoms (Juuni Kokki/Juuni Kokuki)

This is the first anime I loved (was quite obsessed with it at some point). It’s a complex story set in a fantasy world resembling Feudal Japan, mixed with Chinese-Japanese mythology.

Simply put, this anime has amazing character development, history merged with fantasy, class struggles and power structures that reflect the ills and injustices of society, the rise and fall of empires, consequences of corruption and broken moral compasses, and of course women empowerment. I will forever love this series.
